Planning and Preparation of the Inaugural Exhibition of the Retired Caribbean Nurses & the NHS
A fine sunny day in London , at Hackney Museum nurses gathered with personal items they bought to contribute to the exhibition. The project manager (Black Women in the Arts) and project officer (Glenor Roberts) were present to facilitate the planning of the exhibition.

The discussions concentrated on the style of uniform, which uniform were worn by trainee nurses, qualified nurses, matron and staff nurses. What were some of the accessories that were worn with each different uniform: hat (paper or lace) or decorated hats, scissors, watches, belts and that all important decorated buckle attached to the uniform belt. Uniforms and nurses present related to the periods: late 1940’s 1959 to early 1970’s.
The Nurse’s Red & Black Cape truly stole the day and would undoubtedly enhance the Inaugural Exhibition
At ‘What a Journey’ The Retired Caribbean Nurse’s & the NHS Inaugural Exhibition were given the loan of two nurse’s cape. Both arrived on the day, it was a joy to see these two nursing cape. Both would look splendid in the display cabinet and definitely enhance the exhibition.

The interactive element of the exhibition the ‘Nurses Station’ for the first few months of the exhibition, nurses were allocated days and time to be at the ‘Nurses Station’ working in pairs. You can see by the picture below, one nurse signing in book and the other is speaking to a visitor who has visited the exhibition.
